There have been so many great Liverpool players in the past. If everyone were to write a list Steven Gerrard would be in the top 2. The other player 9 times out of 10 would be Kenny Dalglish. At his peak he was the most influential player in the world. He had a knack to come up with vital goals so often you genuinely forget many of them.
Gerrard spent 17 seasons at Anfield, making his Liverpool debut in 1998 and was a 1st team regular in less than 2 years. Within 3 years of establishing himself in the 1st team he succeeded Sami Hyypiä as team captain .
Known affectionately as ‘Captain Marvel’ he carried so many different Reds sides down the years. In 2005, Gerrard was honoured as the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or Bronze Award.
Mourinho attempted to get Gerrard twice, Zidane even tried to talk Perez into buying him for Real Madrid.
There was a lot of talk in the press after the AC Milan final of him leaving for Chelsea. Gerrard told the press after the final, “How can I leave after a night like this?”
More than Midfield-marvel
Capable of playing in numerous positions. Hardworking box to box midfielder, holding midfielder, right-wing, right back, an attacking midfielder and also a second striker.
He had a superb striking ability and tended to score goals from distance.
It’s not a surprise he was so influential. His stamina was impressive, his vision was at times out of the world.
Not to mention his passing accuracy was unheard of – although occasionally getting carried away and his Hollywood passes did go astray. An aerial ability that allowed him to dominate in midfield, allowing him to break down opposition play very easily.
—Zinedine Zidane on Gerrard, 2009. This sums everything up so nicely.
“Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be. He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can’t learn that – players like him are just born with that presence.”
