Liverpool are set to beat Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City to the signing of Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, according to the Daily Express. The 16-year-old left-back is wanted by numerous top clubs, although it now appears Jurgen Klopp has made him a priority.
Sessegnon was named the best 16-year-old in European football last week, and came in 26th in Europe’s top 30 players in the under-20 category by Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was reportedly at Craven Cottage for Fulham’s recent FA Cup defeat against Tottenham to watch the teenager, and was believed to have been impressed by his half-hour substitute performance.
Manchester United and Tottenham have also been linked with the highly rated Sessegnon, as well as Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.
Gareth Bale comparison
The England under-17 international has earned comparisons with Gareth Bale, who also began his career as a left-back, so you can really see why teams are chasing his signature. Sessegnon cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17, although it appears that he will have plenty of suitors when he does.
He has made 15 Championship appearances so far this season, starting an impressive ten games for seventh placed Fulham.
“He is only 16 years old but 100 per cent this player is going to be at the highest level soon,” Fulham manager Slaviša Jokanović said – via Sky Sports.
“I am enjoying the opportunity to work with and use him in my squad. I hope for a long time but in this business you never know what is going to happen.”
