Milner shows the benefits of being Mr Versatility
BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage has said that Liverpool’s converted left-back James Milner is currently the best in his position in the Premier League.
He now joins a growing list of pundits, including Jamie Redknapp, who have singled Milner out this season.
There was so much talk about bringing in a new full back during the transfer window. With both Ben Chilwell and Jonas Hector most Liverpool fans thought we would see a replacement for Moreno arrive.
Klopp know’s best
Initially brought in as a stand in left-back following Moreno’s awful performance in Liverpool’s 4-3 win against Arsenal in August.
After that game came the 2-0 defeat at Burnley. But since then Milner has contributed to an excellent start to the season for Liverpool.
They have however yet to keep a clean sheet in the league. Milner has scored 4 times from the penalty spot this season.
Milner’s displays have been so good it has had the desired effect on his only rival for the spot. “One of the best players in training in the last few weeks is Alberto Moreno,” Klopp said. “He took the situation brilliantly and responded. It is all good.”
Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Savage believes that no other left back in the league can match the hard-working 30-year-old on current form. “I tell you what, is Milner the best left-back in the country at the moment.”
The former England international is renowned for his versatility. He does however have the ability to perform to a high standard in several different positions on the pitch.
Playing a more defensive role hasn’t hindered his creative ability. Klopp’s full-backs always attack. Both providing the width on either side of the pitch.
Both Milner and Clyne are in a league of their own when it comes to chances created in the Premier League this season. Further demonstrating the benefit of effective full backs.
From midfield to defence.
Milner contributed an impressive 16 assists from midfield last season. This means it’s no surprise he’s proving a potent attacking threat as a left back.
This time he has the pace to beat his man or cut inside and deliver a through ball splitting defences in half. His winning mentality and know-how is key to this team’s success this season.
“It is good, what I thought would happen when he plays the role,” was Klopp’s assessment. “We didn’t want to make him a left full-back and think ‘Probably he will struggle”.
The squad is young and somewhat inexperienced. Milner has played at the top level for all his career, his authority is much-needed.
Maybe with Moreno now one of the best in training and Gomez slowly returning to full fitness we are now seeing Klopp’s plan.
