It’s looking likely that Liverpool have been handed a major boost ahead of an incredibly busy Christmas period with the news that Joel Matip will not be heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
He will instead stay at Liverpool and assist Klopp and the Reds with their Premier League title challenge.
The 25-year-old has been in international exile since September 2015. Despite their best efforts Matip is said to have snubbed the advances of Cameroon boss Hugo Broos.
Great news for Liverpool
This is fantastic news for Jurgen Klopp. Initially he thought that he’d be losing both Matip and Mane to the African Cup of Nations for up to five weeks!!
Matip’s importance to Liverpool’s rather unexpected title challenge was highlighted even more last Sunday when he sat on the sidelines watching that horrid defensive display. It must have been painful watching them eventually lose 4-3 to Bournemouth, after throwing away a 3-1 lead.
Matip only moved to Anfield in the summer on a free transfer and has already become a cult hero among Reds supporters. His no-nonsense, combative displays has got him receiving fans praise.
Matip has featured 12 times for Liverpool since his summer switch, and had played every minute of Premier League football since August 27 until a knock forced him to miss that game at Bournemouth.
Thankfully he is expected to be fit to return for the Liverpool’s home game on Sunday against West Ham United.
