Bayern Munich playmaker Mario Gotze will decline an offer from Liverpool as he believes it will be a step down from Bayern and will see his career go backwards.
He would prefer to move to Barcelona, Real Madrid or even Arsenal as he is keen to play Champions League football next season.
But if he went to Liverpool he would have to wait at least a year – should we qualify.
Klopp had ear marked Gotze as a vital target to kickstart his new revolution, believing Bayern would be willing to accept an offer in the region of £20m. With Liverpool so desperate to get back into the Champions League as soon as possible, Klopp needs to sign a 1st team player who can adapt to his methods quickly. Having already worked together at Dortmund everyone thought it was a match made in heaven.
Reports have come out that Gotze has sacked his representatives Sports Total after they tried to push through a move to Liverpool. He had already declared to them this was a move he was not keen on.
Whilst working under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund the two struck up quite a good relationship, and the German manager spoke to recently how it felt when Gotze announced he would be leaving to transfer to Bayern.
“It was like a heart attack.” Klopp said at the time. “At our training ground Michael Zorc [the general manager] walked in like somebody had died.”
I just hope and wish the feeling was mutual.
