Liverpool linked with Thiago Maia

Liverpool are now one of five European Clubs who are interested in signing Santos defensive midfielder Thiago Maia, according to ESPN news sources in Brazil.

Excuse my ignorance, but when I heard the story I also went ‘Thiago who..’

Apparently there are some other clubs that are also interested in the 19-year old. This often is agent talk for ‘I’m driving the price up to get the best possible deal’. However a list of Monaco, Napoli, Schalke 04 and Zenit St Petersburg has already been drawn up.

Although no official offers have been initially accepted, it is though that Zenit St Petersburg have had an €18m bid rejected recently.

Thiago Maia’s thoughts

When recently asked about the situation, Maia told ESPN Brazil: “I’m on vacations. It was a a busy year, but very important for my career. I won a gold medal in the Olympics.”

“In Santos we had a regular season, we won the Campeonato Paulista title and stayed in second place on Campeonato Brasileiro.”

“Finally, now I ant to take a rest and let the people who take care of my career and my club decide if it is the moment for a transfer.”

“If I stay, the supporters can rest easy because I will repeat the good season, fight to win the Libertadores and be a champion.”

Do we need a defensive midfielder?

I’m honestly not sure about this link at all. Whilst it does come from a credible source, there is yet to be any statement from the club. The interesting point is he’s a defensive midfielder. This news story was so last transfer window – it’s all we heard of. Henderson has stepped up and is bossing the midfield alongside Wijnaldum and another.

We need a wide man or central striker. These are the type of players we’ve recently been linked with.

We were have to wait and see – there will be a lot of stories coming out over the weeks that’s for sure.

What do you think? Who would you like us to go for this transfer window? Please feel free to leave a comment.
