Liverpool should keep raiding Southampton for talent
During a title challenge, regardless of how successful you are there is always an achilles heel with all teams. Last season it was whether Leicester’s inexperienced small squad could cope and be consistent enough.
This season we have had stories of Chelsea and Liverpool having a slight unfair helpful hand in the form of no European football. Klopp’s reply to such story was marvellous – quoting how successful championship winning sides play in Europe. Also asking the press to speak to José in January.
Achilles heel – defence by any chance?
For Liverpool, our achilles heel is our defence. Now Klopp says it’s a collective responsibility that starts right at the front. But, regardless it’s fair to say that our defence hasn’t been performing to the same standard as our forward line.
Rodgers built a campaign on the basis of ‘we will score more than we let in’. Whilst that is the premise of football, the gung-ho cavalier approach is very ‘Kevin Keegan’ in his Newcastle days.
Naturally there are, and to a certain extent always will be stories about which defenders we should buy.
Personally I would love us to keep on raiding Southampton for talent and attempt to sign Virgil van Dijk. The great news is Jamie Carragher also has mentioned this.
It’s not a massive surprise to hear Carragher mention a new Centre Back for Liverpool. Having been a rock at the back for so long, there will always be a personal attachment to the position and club. Motd had this for years with Alan Hansen!
However this centre back has been outstanding this season. He is now one of the most coveted players in the Premier League at the moment. This could lead to a lot of competition which would see his valuation soar. But Carragher does question ‘Would he or the board ever be willing to fight Manchester City or Chelsea for the £40m signature of Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk?‘
Redeem those vouchers
Liverpool should be able to use their Loyalty Card and redeem some stamps after recent successful purchases of; Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Sadio Mane.
Let’s not forget for every Adam Lallana there was a Rickie Lambert.
Writing in his Daily Mail column at the weekend, the pundit asked Liverpool to back manager Jurgen Klopp: “Joel Matip has impressed me since he arrived on a free from Schalke but he’s had fitness issues, as has Dejan Lovren.
“I know Klopp holds Joe Gomez, an England Under 21 international who is working his way back to fitness, in high regard but I still think he needs a defender.
“Klopp said he won’t buy someone simply for January but for future seasons and he’s right. But if he wants someone next month he has to be backed, as the stakes could get very big for Liverpool in 2017.”
It will be an interesting transfer window and I’m sure we will be linked to a lot more (Southampton) players.
