Liverpool linked with £20 million Moussa Dembele
Liverpool linked with £20 million January bid for Celtic striker Moussa Dembele. It is believed that Jurgen Klopp is looking for attacking reinforcements in January. Celtic and France U21 striker Moussa Dembele has jumped to the front of the list as a viable target.
Shortlist of attackers
Following long-term injury to Danny Ings and Sadio Mane playing in the African Cup of Nations, Klopp is believed to be considering adding another forward to his squad in January. A shortlist is clearly being drawn up as they have been heavily linked with Julian Brandt, Quincy Promes and Christian Pulisic in recent weeks.
Philippe Coutinho’s injury has only made things worse, whilst initially Klopp may have coped with the loss of Ings and Mane, he needs reinforcements to carry on the great work in the Premier League.
Help Liverpool to the title?
According to Scottish outlet Glasgow Live, Liverpool will offer Celtic a deal worth £20 million for France U21 international Dembele. The deal is thought to be £10m upfront and the second £10m would be incentive related.
This would mean Dembele could quadruple his wages to £60k a week, should he accept the challenge that Liverpool and the Premier League would offer.
Dembele has been very effective in both the Scottish Premiership and in the Champions League, despite only joining Celtic in the summer. Where in 27 games in all competitions this season, the 20-year-old has scored 17 goals. He has also turned provider too with three assists.
Manchester City fans will remember him having successfully scored two against them in September.
How would he fit in?
Dembele is a direct centre-forward who is very capable of operating on the left flank. He possesses the pace and power to drive at defenders on the ball. This would see him easily fitting into the current 4-3-3 system. Allowing him fill the void left by the injured Coutinho and Mane whilst at the African Cup of Nations. Glasgow Live however suggests that Klopp sees Dembele as an automatic pick, which for me is a surprise as I can’t see him ahead of Firmino, Coutinho and Mané.
At this moment Firmino is Klopp’s number one choice to play centrally – showing his importance to Klopp’s pressing system.
Dembele is more similar to Divock Origi, when everyone is back to full fitness he would be competing with Origi for a back-up position. For me this seems like he’s going to be a direct swap for Sturridge. Possibly the 1st sign that he’s on his way out.
However his plus points compared to Origi and Sturridge do appear to be Dembele’s ability to play out wide.
