With the Africa Cup of Nations imminent there is again talk of losing Sadio Mané as he represents Senegal.
The name rumoured to be at the top of the list is again Quincy Promes. Liverpool have been linked with such a move for well over a year and it’s thought that Liverpool are prepared to launch a fresh pursuit of the Dutch winger in January, in the hope that he’ll opt to depart his current surroundings at Spartak Moscow for Merseyside.
In December Liverpool will get a closer look at the 25-year-old in the Champions League when Anfield host Spartak Moscow. Could the game be his opportunity to impress his potential employers.
Whilst Klopp has sufficient cover on the flanks including the likes of Mané, Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, it’s thought that due to Promes’ pace and directness, the attacking threat could slot seamlessly into Liverpool’s potent system.
For many, attack is often recognised as the best form of defence and if Promes was to transfer to Liverpool he would certainly add another dimension to our style of play.
If anything is likely in January, Liverpool really need to focus on resolving the defensive issues. After some quite frankly awful performances the back-four have been criticised on a regular basis, with many calling for wholesale changes to be made accordingly.
Whilst it is a concern losing someone of Mané’s calibre for up to a month, let’s not forget we Solanke and Oxlade-Chamberlain now, we didn’t have these two last season and whilst they aren’t a direct replacement to him, they offer Klopp some alternative cover.
