It’s no secret that Liverpool are looking to add to their squad in the New Year. With Ings out for at least another 8 months and Mané representing Senegal at the African Cup of Nations. The latest name to go in the hat is Bayer Leverkusen starlet Julian Brandt.
According to the Manchester Evening News Manchester City are reportedly pursuing a move for the the 20-year-old too. Brandt has a release clause of £10.75 million in his contract – so whilst admittedly cheaper than you’d expect, I’m sure interest by 2 wealthy Premier League clubs will only increase that fee!
His deal runs until 2019, but Brandt’s father expects to hold talks with the Bundesliga outfit over a new contract: “We are always in touch with Bayer. I think that we’ll get together in the summer of 2017 at the latest to decide how to go on. I can understand that Leverkusen want clarity.”
The winger, who can play on either flank, is impressing once again this year.
Brandt impressed last season, scoring 9 goals and providing 3 assists in the league. Whilst he doesn’t possess the pace of Mané he does have an ability to cause some damage to opposing defences with his direct dribbling. Looking to beat defenders thanks to his quick neat footwork, excellent dribbling skills and ability to accelerate away from players at speed.
Some great skills
Should we make a move for him, I’m not convinced City will be after him, having already recruited one of the Bundesliga’s other top young wingers, Leroy Sane.
That’s not to mention Raheem Sterling, who has looked like a player reborn under manager Pep Guardiola.
2 ex-Bundesliga managers
I’m sure this will be one of many stories that the media will link the 2 ex-Bundesliga managers with a player.
Brandt’s Bayer Leverkusen are currently playing in the Champions League. When Klopp asks Brandt would he swap there has to only be one answer.
As he’s said, he wants someone who wants to play for Liverpool not just ‘another Champions League team’.
