Liverpool move for left-back Gaël Clichy
Liverpool’s search for a new left-back continues, the latest name to be added to Jürgen Klopp’s shortlist is former Manchester City left-back Gaël Clichy, according to the Daily Mail.
The French international could make a remarkable return to Premier League football just days after leaving the Etihad Stadium.
Who else is being linked?
Liverpool are believed to be monitoring Hull City’s Andrew Robertson and AS Monaco’s in demand Benjamin Mendy.
Clichy has emerged as a serious target for Klopp and it is believed that Liverpool will offer the defender a two-year contract in order to tempt him into a summer switch to Merseyside.
Clichy featured an impressive 39 times for Manchester City this season, with 25 of those coming in the Premier League.
Despite this good form, Manchester City recently announced Clichy would be leaving the club when his contract expires this summer. Having spent an incredible 14 years in the Premier League, Liverpool would be getting a born winner with a vast amount of invaluable experience. Despite not being the big money move Liverpool fans were hoping for, he’ll be a welcome addition to their squad.
At the age of 31 he might not be capable of providing the intense high pressing and high energy game which Klopp demands of his team. Having already secured the signing of largely unknown Chelsea youngster Dominic Solanke, it is fair to say most Liverpool fans would have hoped for a bigger name to be announced than Clichy.
