Belive it or not, but it is mathematically possible for Liverpool and Arsenal to finish on the same points, goal difference and goals scored. This would mean a potential historic 39th game to determine who would qualify for final Champions League position.
Arsenal’s 2-0 victory against Southampton on Wednesday night, has opened up the possibility of a final play-off game to determine who finishes fourth.
As reported by the Independent, should Arsenal or Liverpool both finish on the same points, goal difference and goal scored, a 39th game would be needed to determine which side would finish in the final Champions League spot.
Should Arsenal win their game in hand and Liverpool slip up in their remaining two matches, a final play-could be needed.
If a 39th game is required, it will be played at a neutral venue, which would most likely be Wembley.
There is of course, still the possibility that both Manchester clubs could also be involved in the race for the top four, until the bitter end of the season.
However, City’s good form and game in hand means they should pull clear of Arsenal and Liverpool, whilst Jose Mourinho appears to have placed all his eggs in the Europa League basket.
Arsenal travel to Stoke this weekend before finishing the season with two home games against Sunderland and Everton. I’m sure all of the city of Liverpool will be united in hoping Everton win at the Emirates.
In Sunday Liverpool travel to the London Stadium on Sunday to play West Ham, before hosting already relegated Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.
Should Arsenal gain the final Champions League spot, it would mark a colossal turn around in fortunes for the side from north London. It was only a few weeks ago the club looked to be completely out of the top four race, but an upturn in form, coupled with Liverpool dropping points, has blown the contest wide open again.
It really is in our hands! Win both games and regardless of what Arsenal do 4th spot will be ours! This is ours to lose, let’s not slip up at the last minute. The majority of the season we have been in the top 4, don’t slip up now!!
