There has been stories circulating today that the Liverpool owners are prepared to give Jurgen Klopp £40m to spend in the January transfer window.
As discussed in previous articles there are a lot of people talking who we should and shouldn’t buy. The general consensus is that Klopp needs to add to his Liverpool squad to help their Premier League title challenge.
Klopp is not a big fan of the January transfer window, preferring to do his business during in the summer – allowing more time to integrate them into the squad. But he has hinted if they represent long-term value then he would be interested.
Two areas need investment the most; Attack and Defence. With Klopp’s stance on defending as a unit from the front I would think know that he would look to sign another forward. The injuries to Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings, and the departure of Sadio Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal makes it a priority.
According to the German publication SportBild claim Klopp has been given £40 million to secure his targets – even providing a list!
Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt is listed as a possible signing, with the Bundesliga side looking for in the region of £37 million.
Borussia Dortmund teenager Christian Pulisic is believed to be Klopp’s main target, John W. Henry was reported to be happy to go all out to sign him. With the Americans very keen to introduce a US star to the squad for obvious marketing reasons.
More realistic deals this window
From time to time we all need a reality check, I’d be very surprised to see Liverpool spend all of the £40 on one player. However the following two players seem ‘so Liverpool’ – RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg and Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes. For me, these two represent more believable signings.
Forsberg’s agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, told Bild this week that “I still cannot promise that Emil will be staying in Leipzig this winter,” while Promes has been given a glowing recommendation by Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
Liverpool’s other January business and hopefully not their only business is likely to be Mamadou Sakho, Lucas Leiva and Pedro Chirivella, either on loan or a permanent move.
