Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will not take part in the Reds’ key battle against city rivals Everton this weekend, after failing to recover from a foot injury that has seen him absent for over a month.
The Reds’ midfielder missed training at Melwood on Thursday, and while manager Jurgen Klopp hoped his captain would be available for the derby, he has now been ruled out.
Henderson was fit enough to travel with the Liverpool squad to Tenerife during the international break, and Klopp had made positive comments about his progress.
Speaking ahead of the trip, the manager said: “He can make the next steps here, and then hopefully we can do the next steps when we are home next week. We will see. Having him around is always good.”
However, Klopp will now have to make do without Henderson in their midfield engine room for the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
The fixture carries added weight this time as Liverpool continue their hunt for Champions League qualification under pressure from several sides around them.
The Reds sit just four points ahead of rivals Manchester United in fifth, while in-form Everton are six points behind in seventh.
Henderson joins Adam Lallana on Liverpool’s sidelines for the fixture, forcing Klopp to alter his midfield options somewhat.
