Gerrard is lining up a Liverpool coaching role
Steven Gerrard is lining up a Liverpool coaching role after snubbing MK Dons manager’s job. The Liverpool legend was in serious talks with the League One club. Thankfully he has decided not to succeed Karl Robinson. He has now decided to look elsewhere and could be in line for a coaching role at his former club. There are rumours that he could combine with a position in the new-look England set-up.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has always said he would welcome Gerrard back. It is understood that the club are ready to hold informal talks about their star player returning. How could he turn down or stand in the way of Gerrard returning? The obvious role would be one in the academy working alongside Alex Inglethorpe and Steve Heighway. He would be helping to tutor Liverpool’s current crop of youth products.
Gerrard was really impressed by the vision of Dons chairman Pete Winkleman. However, rather wisely he does not want to rush into such an important decision over his future. Speaking to BT Sport, Gerrard said: “I’m just taking a bit of time to consider what’s next, exciting times moving forward. I spoke to MK Dons. I had a chat with the chairman, it’s a very exciting job for somebody else but it’s a bit soon for me. But it’s true, I did speak to them.”
Now he will take time to explore further offers which have already piled up after he declined the chance to extend his playing career in America.
Potential dual role
Some of those offers could be a potential dual role at Anfield and within the coaching set up at the FA. It is understood the FA want talks with both Gerrard and Frank Lampard about joining the coaching team. This would make him part of the new team which will be assembled, should Gareth Southgate be formally offered the manager’s job on a full-time basis.
Gerrard would relish the opportunity in joining Klopp on Merseyside, I’m sure deep down he wishes he could actually have at least half a season playing for him. Having trained with Klopp and the reds last year he admitted how impressed he was. Secretly enjoying the fact he received a famous ‘Klopp cuddle’.
Gerrard has reportedly had numerous offers to play for other clubs in England and on the continent, including Inter Milan. It is up for debate whether any would appeal to him as much as than an emotional Anfield return. The offers of a return to playing will naturally come. His family are now set up back in Liverpool so realistically there is only one option.
