Amazing news for all Liverpool fans; Philippe Coutinho has committed his long-term future to the club. Coutinho has now signed what is thought to be a five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2022. This will now put an end to all the speculation of any move to the continent.
“I would like to thank everybody at the club, first of all,” Coutinho told LiverpoolFC.com.
Coutinho wasn’t the highest paid player at the club. Thankfully FSG have put that right by agreeing a deal that is worth between £150,000 and £200,000-per-week. The great piece of business is that there is no release clause within the contract. This is something Liverpool are rumoured to have insisted upon, which will ensure that he can’t be easily sold on. Should it eventually happen, there is no starting point which often happens with release clauses. Sorry Neymar your bestie won’t be joining you at Barcelona, and PSG, nevermind!!
As discussed in my article; ‘Why Liverpool should keep Coutinho for at least one more season’ where I wrote about what Liverpool should do to keep him I am really pleased the club are proving that they have his best interest at heart. “I am very happy to sign a new contract here. It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here. I will work much harder to repay the belief shown in me,” said Coutinho.
FSG are aware of Coutinho’s growing status and were really keen to reward him with an extended and improved contract. The main motivation behind this is they don’t want to see a repeat of the Luis Suárez saga in 2013‑14. Where Suarez signed a new contract with a release clause, he then had a sensational season and was sold to Barcelona where he has gone on to become one of, if not ‘The best’ goalscorer in the world!
Coutinho has really flourished at Anfield since his £8.5m move from Inter Milan. His combination of vision, passing, dribbling and long-range strikes earned him the nickname Little Magician. After he was named in the 2015 PFA Team of the Year, Brazilian legend Pelé tipped Coutinho for a ‘great future’.
“I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it’s a great honour for me. It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day. I am very thankful to this football club for everything.”
Jurgen Klopp was also a key factor
“Jurgen is a great manager. We all can see how much he has changed here since he arrived – and how much he will change in future.
He is a winner,” Coutinho said. This commitment will represent a vote of confidence in Klopp’s massive rebuilding work at Anfield. When a potential ‘World Class’ player decides to stay at and help a project like this it really makes a massive statement.
Coutinho has had a major influence on the team’s rise to Premier League contention this season. Hopefully this will turn around our fortunes in what has been a very poor January, a win against Southampton tonight will certainly help out.
It seems as if the ‘Klopp Effect’ isn’t just making Coutinho happy, “It’s not only me, but every other player feels honoured to play at this great club for this great manager. This feeling has a very positive influence on us as players.”
