Emre Can: “I’m having a hard time watching from the bench” 5 Comments

Emre Can has recently admitted that whilst he’s been impressed with how his midfield rivals have performed, he is having a hard time watching from bench. Especially as the Reds really seem to be enjoying their football under Jurgen Klopp.

“I am a very, very bad watcher!” he commented. “Of course I’m always happy when my team wins, but it’s always different when you play.”

After suffering an ankle injury early in the season and now admits he has a massive battle on his hands to regain his starting place in the Liverpool team.

“It is always better to play and be on the pitch. For me, it has been a little bit unlucky so far this season because I came back a little bit late and had a very short break after the Euros.”

Whilst recovering for injury and gaining full fitness Can has seen Jordan Henderson establish himself in the defensive midfield role. Klopp has opted for a 4-3-3 formation and has Henderson playing between Lallana and Wijnaldum.

Can having to watch scenes like this from the bench

This season

The change in formation has so far been a success as Klopp’s side have so far been performing well.
Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League, just two points off Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Can has only made five appearances so far this season, 3 of them in the League – mainly starting on the bench.

“I have to work hard. I have to get fitness back. If I get game time – which is always different to training – I have to work hard on my game and get confidence again.”

How far we’ve come

Whilst frustrating to see a talent like Can wait hung from the dugout. It’s a massive testament as to how far we have come. Last season when Can was injured we really panicked and couldn’t work out how we’d cope. He was rushed back from injury and faced Villarreal in what was a truly amazing individual performance.

Can will get his opportunity again – possibly against Man Utd

Games like the one at Crystal Palace where they went down to 10-men. Can sat in front of a back 2 and controlled the game.
You can understand he is itching to get back our there. “That’s very important for me. I haven’t played so many minutes this season but of course my target is to play a lot of minutes again.”

Long campaign ahead

Thankfully the young German is remaining positive. It’s going to be a long campaign and I’m sure Wijnaldum and Henderson will need to be rested some time!!

“Now I have to continue the work, I have to work hard. And I am confident enough that if I am ready and fit, I will play one day.”

      He is a quality player.
I think he’ll play against Utd if Lallana is still injured.
With a front 3 of Coutinho-Firmino-Mane. Klopp seems to prefer that against the top teams.

Great article – I feel for him. He must have thought he’did walk into the 1st team this season.
    Some great games last year.
But wow – what quality on the bench.

It’s looking likely that Wijnaldum and Lallana will be rested due to injuries.
      That means playing;
      Firmino Sturridge Mane
      Coutinho Henderson Can
