Teenage sensation Ben Woodburn has agreed a professional contract with Liverpool – finally after being with us for a massive 10 years. He joined the 1st team during the start of Liverpool’s pre-season in the summer. Boy did he impress – scoring in both the games against Wigan and Fleetwood Town, as well as impressing against Tranmere.
The attacker is from Tattenhall near Chester and has a massive future ahead of him. It is evident in the rapid rise though the ranks as at the start of last season he was fast-tracked from Des Maher’s under-16s squad to the under-18s. All at the tender age of 15 years old. He was even arriving to training in his school uniform!
Blessed with pace, strength, skill and a lethal eye for goal
Des Maher’s comments, “I’ve worked with Ben for the last two seasons, he comes in every day and gives it everything he has got.”
“I believe he is destined to make big steps in the game.”
He is incredibly versatile with the ability to play anywhere along the front line as well as in an attacking midfield role. This would work well with Klopp’s interchanging style of play. It’s no wonder the excitement over what he might go on to become is growing by the day.
Comparisons with Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey are hardly surprising. There ‘s even talk that they could play alongside each other for Wales.
He looked promising at Tranmere on Friday, and continued to shine against Fleetwood. This time he was playing from the left in the second half, his touch was immaculate and his head was always up. And seven minutes into the half, he was presented with his golden moment a back post tap in from Ryan Kent’s cut back.
Woodburn at Melwood
Woodburn is very familiar with Melwood as he’s part of the Futures Group – a selection of the most highly rated Academy youngsters across the under-15 to under-21 age groups. Training there once a week under the guidance of first-team development coach Pep Lijnders. This is an amazing opportunity for him to really showcase his talents.
Jurgen Klopp actually watches those sessions with interest. If Woodburn continues his eye-catching development then the Liverpool manager will be seeing plenty more of him.
This lad has a long way to go before he can say he’s made it. But, he’s with the right manager who is famous for making house hold names.
Here’s hoping he’s given every opportunity to do so.
