Jurgen Klopp has been after the young American Christian Pulisic for quite a while now. The chances of the Borussia Dortmund holding onto the midfielder has reduced even more! The issue for Liverpool is that mega rich PSG have reportedly entered the race to sign Pulisic.
It looks likely that Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the PSG president is willing to stump up as much cash as they need to get him.
According to German newspaper Bild, the transfer is actually being driven by Patrick Kluivert, PSG sporting director. He has identified Pulisic as the club’s number one transfer target.
The riches invested into the club give them the resources available to meet any fee that Dortmund might suggest. With a network of over $170bn, QIA will see most transfers are simply small change.
It’s not always about money
With Liverpool, we have 2 advantages with Klopp.
- His close relationship with Borussia Dortmund.
- A world class manager who has the reputation of bringing young stars into the spotlight at the highest level.
Despite Liverpool being a club with a huge amount of history, Liverpool wouldn’t want to compete financially with PSG’s. FSG haven’t really entered the market all guns blazing since the days of Damien Comolli. All transfers in and out of the club seem very calculated.
However, the Reds do have a big-name appeal that brings them great global fame. Klopp only wants players who want to play for the club and him. Regardless of money or European status.
Next season and beyond
However, at this moment in time its really looking likely we’ll qualify for the Champions League next year. This will open the door to a different group of players who will now stand up and take Klopp and his project more seriously.
Klopp has now got Liverpool playing a style of football that is certainly enticing. Whilst it’s plenty for Pulisic to think about is it worth the wait. The wait to see who else is out there in June?
It’s going to be an interesting few months.
