Anfield welcomes Liverpool vs Southampton, maximum points is a must!
Man City’s 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace now put them in third place due to having a better goal difference. Liverpool’s destiny is in their own hands, winning the remaining three games will guarantee a return to Europe’s elite stage.
A week in which the media have gone crazy drawing up lists of which Southampton players we should buy next it’s very apt we should play them! Is it an audition? Potentially!!
Team News Summary
- Klopp has a strong squad available.
- Coutinho back in full training.
- Lallana pushing for starting role.
- Henderson’s injury with captain’s season almost over.
- Big choice between Sturridge or Origi should Klopp opt for a recognised striker.
- Would Lallana play alongside Can and Wijnaldum? Or opt for Lucas?
Choosing starting XI
Coming to the end of the season now where we have effectively three cup finals Klopp has arguably the strongest squad of 2017 at his disposal. No more relying upon fringe players to make the squad.
This does potentially allow a but if creativity within the line-up. Which is an exciting prospect – no predictability!! Could it be 3-4-3, 4-4-2 (diamond) or 4-3-3.
Bringing continuity would mean keeping the defence and attack untouched, so that would allow a straight swap of Lallana for Lucas. Can moving to the holding role, Wijnaldum in box-to-box duties and Lallana resuming in attacking midfield.
However Lucas has been performing well, Origi hasn’t scored in the past 4 games. Surely playing a front 3 of Lallana, Firmino and Coutinho would make more sense? This lineup would ensure stability is retained in midfield to help protect the back-line. Allowing a platform for the free-roaming forward trio.
Goals are a must, so Klopp could name an attack-focussed XI, potentially selecting Lallana and Sturridge. This would allow a diamond formation with Coutinho tucked in behind the front two of Firmino and Sturridge.
Whatever formation or starting XI Klopp selects it’s really exciting to have a lot of options available.
The game will be a tightly fought contest and Liverpool have to avenge to Cup loss earlier in the season.
It’s the time of year we love, this year we have excitement and trepidation rolled into one. Oh to be a football fan!!
